Tokyo 2020 unveils sustainability plan tied to SDGs
Be better together — for the planet and the people.
This week, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games unveiled its sustainability plan and the plan’s guiding principle. The guiding principle is: “Be better, together – for the planet and the people.” The organizing committee noted that the goal of the plan was not just to ensure the sustainability of the Games, but also to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The plan focuses on five key areas, including: Climate Change; Resource Management; Natural Environment and Biodiversity; Consideration of Human Rights, Labour, and Fair Business Practices; and, Cooperation and Communications (Engagement).
Here at SDG Compacts, we are thrilled to see the Olympic committee taking steps to integrate the SDGs into their guiding principle and sustainability plan. We applaud the Tokyo 2020 Sustainability Committee Chairperson Hiroshi Komiyama for noting that the Games are “a great opportunity for us to show to the world a vision of society humankind is striving for in the 21st century.”
