PRESS RELEASE: Launching the Global Race for Climate Smart Sustainable Development

“Global Race for Climate Smart Sustainable Development” launches to mobilize cities, communities, and partners to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Climate Accord by 2030

Global group of over 40 cross-sector partners commit to driving local action towards global goals

July 17, 2018 – New York, New York –  Today, in recognition of International Justice Day, a global group of over 40 cross-sector partners committed to joining the “Global Race for Climate Smart Sustainable Development,” an initiative sparked by the SDG Compacts movement to mobilize cities, communities, and supportive partners towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Accord by 2030.

Building off action-oriented co-design meetings held over the past year, communities, cities, and local government networks around the world have committed to setting locally determined and prioritized targets that are time bound, measurable, and aligned with the Paris Climate Accord and SDGs. By the end of 2018, committed partners will focus on establishing a data baseline and setting specific targets for 2020 as part of the Global Race for Climate Smart Sustainable Development.

Partners will use these targets to generate political will, mobilize resources, establish local reporting platforms, and validate local progress. Participating cities and communities will join a group of “trailblazers” intent on transformational action, and other partners will support this local action for global progress. Connected by a set of core values and mutual accountability mechanisms such as the SDG Compacts, participants in the Global Race for Climate Smart Sustainable Development aim to accelerate bold and transformative – yet measurable – progress towards achieving the SDGs and the Paris Climate Accord based on local priorities and actions.  All partners are invited to establish a data baseline and targets for 2020, by the end of 2018.

Partners behind this effort come from around the world and across sectors, including cities and local communities, foundations, academics, NGOs, and more.
